ELON, N.C. – Off to its best start through 10 games since the 1999-00 season, the Elon University women’s basketball team plays its final contest of the calendar year on Thursday night, Dec. 30, when the Phoenix heads to Huntington, W. Va. to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd. Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside the Cam Henderson Center.
THE SERIES: Elon and Marshall will be meeting for the fourth time on Thursday, with the Thundering Herd holding a slight 2-1 advantage all-time versus the Phoenix. The two teams last met on Dec. 29, 2004 in the Terrapin Classic in College Park, Md. with Marshall claiming a 71-43 win. On Dec. 18, 1998, Marshall topped Elon, 62-56, at the Bearcat Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio. Elon’s only victory over Marshall came on Jan. 12, 1974 when legendary head coach Kay Yow led Elon to a 60-46 victory over Marshall in the first game of the 1973-74 season.
THE BAREFOOT FILE: Elon head coach
Karen Barefoot is in her 13th season as a head coach and enters Thursday’s contest with a 195-135 career record, including a 29-43 mark in her third season with the Phoenix.
ON THIS DATE: Elon has a 4-3 record all-time in games played on Dec. 30. The last time Elon played on Dec. 30 was in 2006 when the Phoenix dropped a 69-59 decision at Chattanooga. Elon’s last win on Dec. 30 was in 2005 when the Phoenix claimed a 64-54 victory against UNC Pembroke. Elon is 4-1 all-time on Dec. 30 against non-conference opponents with victories over UNC Pembroke, American (two wins) and North Carolina A&T. Elon’s only non-conference loss on Dec. 30 came against UMass in 2004 with a 57-50 setback in the Terrapin Classic in College Park, Md.
LOOKING AHEAD: Elon jumps back into league play on Jan. 3 at home when it welcomes the Georgia Southern Eagles to Alumni Gym for a 7 p.m. Southern Conference tilt.
BLOCK PARTY: The Phoenix recorded 10 total blocks in its 61-60 win over Davidson on Dec. 20, putting its season total at 62 (first in SoCon).
Lisa Archie is averaging 2.8 blocks per game (second in SoCon) and
Kelsey Evans is averaging 2.2 blocks per game (fourth in SoCon). In just her second season, Evans has recorded 77 career blocks, good for fifth all-time in Elon history. Evans is 21 blocked shots shy of passing Elizabeth Ward (1989-93) for fourth all-time.
STOP, THIEF!: Shon Redmond is averaging 2.6 steals per game this season for the Phoenix, putting her atop the Southern Conference. Redmond tallied eight steals against Virginia Intermont earlier this season, tying her with several Elon players for the fourth most in a single game in school history.
CLIMBING THE LADDER: In only her second season,
Ali Ford has tallied 684 career points. Ford ranks third in the Southern Conference in scoring at 18.5 ppg and is first in the league in three pointers made with 33 (3.3 per game). Ford ranks fifth all-time in Elon history with 117 three pointers made, putting her 18 shy of passing Tierra Brumbrey (2004-08) for fourth all-time.
IN RARE COMPANY: With 41 career games played under her belt,
Ali Ford ranks fifth all-time in Elon history in points per game, as the Morganton, N.C. native has a 16.7 ppg average in her second season.
LINEUP CHANGES: The Phoenix changed its starting five for the first time all season in its last game versus Davidson, resulting in a 61-60 victory.
Shon Redmond and
Lisa Archie both earned their first career starts in the win. Archie scored a career-high nine points in a career-high 26 minutes of action to go along with six boards and three blocks. Redmond provided the late game heroics for the Phoenix, scoring three-points on an old-fashioned three-point play to help Elon take the lead with 18.3 second remaining. Redmond finished with a career-high 13 points in the win.
