ELON, N.C. – With sole possession of first place in the Southern Conference on the line, the Elon University women’s basketball team (13-5, 8-2 SoCon) is back at home on Monday night, Jan. 24, when the Phoenix takes on the Appalachian State Mountaineers (14-4, 8-2 SoCon). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside Alumni Gym and admission is $5 for adults and $3 for youth 12 and under.
THE SERIES: Monday marks the 26th all-time meeting between the Phoenix and Mountaineers. Appalachian State leads the series, 16-9, after taking the first meeting, 100-67, earlier this season in Boone. Elon has not beat Appalachian State at home in exactly seven years (Jan. 24, 2004).
ON THIS DATE: Elon has a 6-3 mark all-time in games played on Jan. 24, with its last win coming in the form of a 48-39 victory over Longwood in 2007. Monday will mark the second time Elon and Appalachian State have met on Jan. 24, with the Phoenix holding a 1-0 advantage.
LOOKING AHEAD: Following Monday’s game, Elon plays its final non-conference game of the season on Thursday morning, Jan. 27, when it hosts Southern Virginia at 11 a.m. in the seventh annual Education Day contest. The Phoenix jumps back into Southern Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 29, with a trip to Cullowhee, N.C. to face Western Carolina.
THE BAREFOOT FILE: Elon head coach
Karen Barefoot enters Monday's game with a 202-136 career record in her 13th season as a head coach, including a 30-50 mark in her third season with the Phoenix.
BAREFOOT REACHES MILESTONE: Karen Barefoot captured her 200th career victory on Jan. 16 when the Phoenix topped Wofford, 64-47, in Spartanburg, S.C. Barefoot recorded 102 victories at Apprentice School in six seasons, leading her team to the 2001 NSCAA National title and coaching a total of seven All-American players. Barefoot recorded 70 wins at Lenoir-Rhyne in four seasons, leading the Bears to their first NCAA postseason appearance and SAC title in school history, while also earning league Coach of the Year honors. In three seasons at Elon, Barefoot has amassed 30 victories.
CONFERENCE STANDINGS: Elon and Appalachian State both came out victorious on Saturday and both teams remain atop the Southern Conference standings with an 8-2 record. The Mountaineers topped UNC Greensboro, 83-72, in Greensboro, while the Phoenix needed overtime to claim a 56-49 win over College of Charleston. Samford and UNCG sit behind Elon and Appalachian State with a 6-4 record, followed by Chattanooga (6-5), Georgia Southern (5-6), Furman (4-5), Western Carolina (4-5), Davidson (3-6), Wofford (2-7) and College of Charleston (2-8).
BLOCK PARTY: Kelsey Evans recorded her third five-block game of the season (fifth career) in Elon’s overtime win over College of Charleston on Saturday, Jan. 22. Evans currently ranks second in the Southern Conference in blocked shots with 41 (2.3 per game) and needs just one more block to tie Elizabeth Ward for fourth all-time in Elon history. Teammate
Lisa Archie is third in the league with 31 blocks (2.1 per game), while
Lei Lei Hairston is eighth in the conference with 23 blocks (1.9 per game). Elon leads the league with 111 total blocked shots (6.2 per game).
GOING STREAKING: Elon is currently riding a seven-game winning streak. The last time the Phoenix had a winning streak of seven or more games was the 2002-03 season when the team won seven in a row from Dec. 30-Jan. 25. Elon has also won eight consecutive Southern Conference games, which the team has never done before since officially becoming a member of an athletic conference in 1977-78.
STREAK SNAPPED: Elon had lost its last six games against College of Charleston prior to its 56-49 overtime win on Saturday, Jan. 22. With the win, head coach
Karen Barefoot has now recorded a victory against all 10 of Elon’s opponents in the Southern Conference.
SURPASSING LAST SEASON: With its 13th win of the season on Saturday, Jan. 22, versus College of Charleston, the Phoenix surpassed its win total from all of last season. Elon already surpassed its Southern Conference win total on Jan. 19 at UNC Greensboro when the Phoenix recorded its seventh league victory.
MOVING ON UP: With 21 points in Elon’s 56-49 victory over College of Charleston on Saturday,
Ali Ford has tallied 792 career points. Ford is currently fifth in the Southern Conference in scoring at 16.3 points per game and has scored in double figures in 34 out of Elon’s last 37 games.
ON THE GLASS: Kelsey Evans currently leads the Southern Conference in rebounding at 8.7 boards per game. In her second season, Evans has registered 380 career rebounds.
HOME SWEET HOME: Elon improved to 8-1 at home with its win over College of Charleston on Saturday. Elon is averaging 73.1 points per game at home this season and is outscoring opponents by a +13.2 margin inside Alumni Gym.
EDUCATION DAY ON THE HORIZON: On Thursday, the Elon women’s basketball team will host the seventh annual Education Day inside Alumni Gym. Tip is set for 11 a.m. as the Phoenix hosts Southern Virginia in front of several local elementary and middle school students.
WHITE OUT ALUMNI GYM: The newly renovated Alumni Gym will be packed full of Phoenix fans dressed in white on Thursday, Feb. 10, as the Elon women’s basketball team aims to take down cross-town rival UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m. Elon fans will receive a free T-shirt at the door.
