Elon Game Notes
ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s basketball team will play the front end of two remaining regular season road games on Monday night, Feb. 14, as the Phoenix (16-9, 10-6) heads to Greenville, S.C. to face the Furman Paladins (11-14, 7-9). Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside Timmons Arena.
THE SERIES: Monday will mark the 17th all-time meeting between Elon and Furman, with the Phoenix holding a 9-7 series lead. The Phoenix topped the Paladins, 79-59, earlier this season in Alumni Gym behind 17 points, nine rebounds and five blocks from
Lei Lei Hairston. The Phoenix put a total of nine players in the scoring column against the Paladins in the victory and held a 48-37 advantage on the boards. Elon has a 3-4 record all-time against the Paladins in Greenville, but won last year’s meeting, 58-55.
THE BAREFOOT FILE: Elon head coach
Karen Barefoot enters Monday’s game with a 205-140 career record in her 13th season as a head coach, including a 33-54 mark in her third season with the Phoenix. Barefoot captured her 200th career victory earlier this season on Jan. 16 when the Phoenix topped Wofford, 64-47, in Spartanburg, S.C. Barefoot recorded 102 victories at Apprentice School in six seasons, leading her team to the 2001 NSCAA National title and coaching a total of seven All-American players. Barefoot recorded 70 wins at Lenoir-Rhyne in four seasons, leading the Bears to their first NCAA postseason appearance and SAC title in school history, while also earning league Coach of the Year honors. In three seasons at Elon, Barefoot has amassed 33 victories. This season marks Barefoot’s 11th winning season in 13 years as a head coach.
LOOKING AHEAD: Following Monday’s contest at Furman, Elon returns to the friendly confines of Alumni Gym for its final two home games of the season. The Phoenix hosts the Samford Bulldogs on Saturday, Feb. 19, for its Pink Zone game at 2 p.m., as all fans will receive free pom poms. The game will also be televised on SportSouth. The Phoenix closes out its home schedule on Monday night, Feb. 21, when the Chattanooga Lady Mocs come to Alumni Gym for a key Southern Conference matchup. The game will mark the final home contest for seniors Julie Taylor, Jess Luedtke and Gabby Oloye.
ON THIS DATE: Despite claiming wins against both Duke (1976) and Wake Forest (1977), Elon has a 6-9 record in games played on Feb. 14. The team’s last victory on Feb. 14 was in 2004 when the team topped Davidson, 55-53, on the road. Elon has lost its last two games played on Feb. 14.
WINNING WAYS: Elon clinched its first winning season since 2003-04 on Saturday with its win over Wofford. Elon’s 16 wins this season tie the combined victories from the previous two seasons. The 2003-04 squad finished the season with a 17-12 record and a 12-4 mark in league play. Since joining Division I in 1999-00, the most wins by any Elon team was when the 2002-03 team finished the season with 19 victories. The last time an Elon team finished the season with 20 or more wins was in 1981-82 when the team ended the season with a 25-5 record.
FORD TRACKER: With 20 points in Elon’s win over Wofford on Saturday,
Ali Ford has accumulated 926 career points in only her second season. With four regular season games and at least one Southern Conference Tournament game remaining, Ford will need to average 14.8 points per game in order to reach 1,000 career points this season. In order to reach the career milestone at home, Ford will need to average 24.7 points per game over the Phoenix’s next three games against Furman, Samford and Chattanooga. If Ford reaches the 1,000-point milestone this season, she will join Elon Sports Hall of Famer Venessa Corbett (1978-82) and Nuggie Dixon (1979-82) as one of three players to reach 1,000 career points by their sophomore season. The last Elon player to reach the 1,000-point mark was Tierra Brumbley, who finished her career in 2007-08 with 1,095 points.
IF THE TOURNAMENT STARTED TODAY: If the Southern Conference Tournament started today, Elon (10-6 SoCon) would earn the No. 3 seed and play on Saturday, March 5 against the winner between No. 11 seeded Wofford and sixth-seeded Georgia Southern and the game would begin approximately 30 minutes after the 9 a.m. game between fourth-seeded Chattanooga and fifth-seeded UNC Greensboro. Appalachian State would earn the top seed, while Samford would enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed. The 2011 SoCon Basketball Tournament is set for March 3-7, 2011 at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn.
FROM BEYOND THE ARC: With a pair of three-point field goals in Elon’s win over Wofford on Saturday,
Ali Ford has tallied 153 triples in only her second season, good for third all-time in Elon history. Ford needs two more three-pointers to pass Holly Andrews (2000-04) for second place all-time. Loretta Lawson (1997-01) holds the all-time career record for three-pointers made with 234. In only her second season, Ford has registered 470 three-point field goal attempts, good for third all-time in Elon history behind Jessica Williams (498) and Lawson (741).
REACHING THE 70 POINT MARK: Elon has a perfect 10-0 record this season when it records 70 or more points. Elon is winning games by an average of 20.7 points when it scores 70 or more points.
ON THE GLASS: Kelsey Evans currently leads the Southern Conference in rebounding at 8.8 boards per game. In only her second season, Evans has registered 439 career rebounds.
CLOSING TIME: Elon is 14-1 (8-1 SoCon) when leading with five minutes left in regulation. Elon’s only loss when it led with five minutes remaining in regulation was on Feb. 7 in a 71-69 overtime loss at Georgia Southern.
MAROON GOES PINK: Elon’s annual Pink Zone game is set for Feb. 19 at home against Samford. The Southern Conference matchup will be televised on SportSouth. Tip-off between the Phoenix and Bulldogs is set for 2 p.m. inside Alumni Gym, with the Elon men to follow at 8 p.m. versus UNC Greensboro.
