ELON, N.C. – The Elon women's basketball team (2-1) travels to the nation's capital to face American (3-0) in its next game on Sunday, Nov. 22. Tip is set for 7 p.m. in Binder Arena in Washington, D.C.

Last Time Out
A near triple-double by Shay Burnett led the Phoenix to a 90-83 win over visiting Charlotte on Thursday night. Burnett finished with 28 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists (all career highs). Elon held a 26-point advantage at half before the Charlotte managed to tie the game in the fourth period. The Phoenix held the 49ers from taking the lead and finished off the game on an 11-4 run. The Phoenix finished 32-of-70 from the field to shoot 46 percent, claiming 40 points in the paint, and went 9-of-23 from beyond the arc (38 percent). Elon also shot 85 percent from the stripe, 17-of-20, and claimed a 47-39 advantage on the glass. Burnett held a 6-of-15 mark from the field and went 15-of-16 from the charity stripe, also a career high, while also tallying three steals. Three other players scored in double figures for the maroon and gold with 12 points from Malaya Johnson, 11 from Lauren Brown and 10 from Jenifer Rhodes.

Scouting the Eagles
American is still in search of its first win this season after falling to fellow Colonial Athletic Association team Hofstra, 60-51, on Thursday in its first home game. The Eagles have also dropped games to Princeton and No. 22 George Washington. AU is averaging only 44.3 points per game and holds a 33 percent mark from the field and has been held to 12 percent from long distance. Senior guard Ari Booth leads the team with 15 points per game followed by nine ppg from Michelle Holmes. American trails in the rebounding margin by 17.7 boards per game with Holmes and rookie Elina Koskimies hauling down a team-high 3.7 per game.

The Series
Sunday marks only the fourth meeting between the two programs, all of which have been played this century. After Elon won games both played on Dec. 30 in 2002 and 2003, American won the last meeting in Alumni Gym on Nov. 24, 2012. The Eagles claimed a 69-68 victory after a layup with five seconds remaining did not fall through the hoop for the Phoenix. Elon leads the series, 2-1.

(New) Career Night
Shay Burnett had a night full of new career highs against Charlotte on Nov. 19. The sophomore tallied the fifth double-double of her career and second of the season, falling just shy of a triple-double, with 28 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists, all of which were new career highs. Burnett finished 6-of-15 from the field, including one three, and hit another new career-high 15-of-16 attempts from the charity stripe. She also tied her career high in steals with three against the 49ers.

Home-Court Advantage
Alumni Gym has proven to be a tough place to play for opponents under head coach Charlotte Smith. The maroon and gold is 45-15 in Alumni Gym in five seasons under Coach Smith. The Phoenix went 10-5 at home during the 2014-15 season after a 10-4 record during the 2013-14 season. The Phoenix has lost no more than five games at home in a season and out scored its opponents 1,001-963 on Robertson Court last year.

Stop, Thief!
The Elon defense tallied an impressive 14 steals in its win over Lenoir-Rhyne on Nov. 14 and another 10 at Liberty on Nov. 16. The Phoenix is averaging 10 steals per game, while opponents are only managing 6.7.

Head Coach Charlotte Smith
Elon head coach Charlotte Smith is in her fifth season with the Phoenix and owns a 71-58 career record. Smith has led Elon to three straight conference tournament semifinal appearances, as well as an at-large bid to the 2015 WNIT, the first in program history, after a 19-13 overall record and 11-7 league mark in its first season in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Looking Ahead
Elon remains on the road and travels a short distance to Annapolis, Md., to take on the Mids of the Naval Academy in a 7 p.m. tip on Tuesday, No. 24.
