Preseason WNIT Backet
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Women's NIT announced today, June 13, game times and matchups for the 2016 Preseason WNIT. The Elon women's basketball team is scheduled to play at Green Bay in the first round on Friday, Nov. 11, at 8 p.m. (EST) in Green Bay, Wis.
The winner of the Elon/Green Bay game will move on to play either Little Rock or North Texas on Sunday, Nov. 13 or Monday, Nov. 14, with the game site TBD. The semifinals are Nov. 17, and the Preseason WNIT Championship will be played at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, with the contest being televised by CBS Sports Network.
The tournament features a three-game guarantee, so if a team loses in the championship bracket before it has played three games, it will play in the consolation bracket.
Elon finished last season with an 18-13 overall record and an 11-7 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Phoenix earned a bid to the Postseason WNIT for the second straight season in 2016, marking its third postseason tournament appearance in the last four years.
Green Bay, also the Phoenix, made its 16th appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2016 after wining its 14th Horizon League Tournament title, including its second straight. The 10th-seeded Phoenix fell to seventh-seeded Tennessee, 59-53, in the first round in Tempe, Ariz.
Making its Preseason WNIT debut along with Elon are the squads from Abilene Christian, Central Michigan, Fordham, Green Bay, Missouri, Omaha and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. It's the second time around for Eastern Washington (2005), Furman (1997), Little Rock (2009), Northern Texas (2006) and Washington (1994-champions).
Joining the event for the third time are Colorado State (1998-champions, 2002) and Nebraska (1997, 2004); Notre Dame is in the mix for the fifth time (1996, 2004-champions, 2007, 2011).
In the 2015 Preseason WNIT Championship, Baylor defeated DePaul, 86-72. Both teams later advanced to the NCAA Tournament; DePaul reached the Sweet 16, and Baylor made it to the quarterfinals.
The Preseason WNIT began in its modern form in 1994. Since its inception, more than 200 teams representing all 32 conferences have competed in the tournament. The UConn Huskies have won the championship a record three times. It is organized and produced by Triple Crown Sports, a national sports event company based in Fort Collins, Colo.
