ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's lacrosse team heads into an important final weekend with a road test against the William & Mary Tribe on Saturday, April 29, at Martin Family Stadium to close out the regular season before next week's CAA Women's Lacrosse Championships.
LAST TIME OUT
The Phoenix (11-5, 3-2 CAA) earned a 15-7 victory over Hofstra on Senior Day at Rudd Field. The 11 victories set a new program record for most in a single season, surpassing last year's 10-win campaign.
Nicole Sinacori stole the show with her second four-goal game of the season. Both
Sloane Kessler and
Melissa Birdsell scored three times apiece with Birdsell completing her hat trick in the first 24 minutes of the game.
Rachel Ramirez picked up eight ground balls in the cage while making seven saves with two caused turnovers.
THE SERIES
Elon and William & Mary have split the first two matchups to date. The home team has been victorious in both games. A season ago, Elon went to William & Mary on April 30, 2016 and suffered a narrow 11-9 defeat.
SCOUTING THE TRIBE (3-13, 0-5 CAA)
William & Mary will wrap up the season on Senior Day Saturday afternoon. As a team, the Tribe currently leads the CAA in ground balls per game (20.06) and saves (8.88), while it ranks second in draw controls (12.5) and third in caused turnovers (11.25). The Tribe's caused turnover average ranks 15th nationally. Individually, senior Abby Junior ranks fourth nationally in caused turnovers per game (2.87) and 10th in ground balls per game (3.53). Senior Lindsey Jenks leads the team in points (42), goals (33) and ranks second in draw controls (34).
LACROSSE'S HEISMAN
On March 16,
Stephanie Asher and
Rachel Ramirez were added to the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List. The two players represent the first Elon athletes to be named to the watch list for the sport's highest honor. Asher's 50 goals this season leads the CAA and is 26th in the country with her 3.13 goals per game also ranks 26th in the nation entering Saturday. Ramirez leads the CAA in saves, second in saves per game and third in ground balls. She has made 131 stops this year - good for 41st in the country - and has 52 ground balls on the season, which ranks second in the CAA.
CENTURY SCORER
Stephanie Asher became the program's first player to reach the 100-career goal mark when she scored in the second half against No. 9 Notre Dame back on Feb. 23. She scored at least five goals in a game on four occasions with her season high coming March 26 with six goals against Davidson. The junior set a new program record for goals in a single season with four against Drexel on Friday, April 14, in a 15-2 win at home over the Dragons. She is the only player to log at least 40 goals in a season in program history.
AN ACTIVE LEADER
With 132 career goals,
Stephanie Asher is 22nd on the NCAA's active goal-scoring list entering the weekend and her 3.13 goals per contest is 26th-best in the country. She is one of just five juniors among the Top 25 active goal scorers in the country in just 49 games played. Asher is also the CAA's active goal scoring leader.
CAA TOURNAMENT BOUND
After Sunday's win against Hofstra, Elon guaranteed its spot in the CAA Tournament for the second year in a row. Standing at 3-2 in conference play, Elon will earn the No. 3 seed with a win against the Tribe. Should Elon fall, the Phoenix would be the No. 3 seed if Drexel defeats Delaware, creating a three-way tie with the Dragons and Blue Hens that Elon holds the tiebreaker in thanks to wins over both programs. Should Elon lose and Delaware defeats Drexel, Elon would be the No. 4 seed behind Delaware. James Madison has already locked up the No. 1 seed and Towson is the No. 2 seed after winning Sunday against Drexel. The CAA Tournament will be held at Johnny Unitas Stadium with the semifinals on Friday, May 5, and the finals on Sunday, May 7.
ON THE NATIONAL SCENE
Elon has dropped out of the IWLCA poll even though it won both of its games last week. In the Cascade/Inside Lacrosse poll, the Phoenix is still receiving votes with six other teams. Back on March 6 when Elon was No. 16 in the IL poll, it marked the first time in Elon's four-year history the team was ranked in a national poll.
SIGNATURE WINS
With the Feb. 11 win over No. 13 Virginia and the March 1 victory over No. 19 Virginia Tech, Elon has now defeated three nationally ranked teams over the course of the last two seasons. In 2016, the Phoenix went on the road to No. 10 Duke and won 7-6 in Durham, N.C. Elon owns an all-time record of 3-9 against ACC opponents. Overall against ranked teams, Elon is 3-13 in 16 games to date.
PRESEASON HONORS
Two Phoenix earned preseason All-CAA honors on Jan. 20 with
Stephanie Asher and
Rachel Ramirez being named to the All-CAA team and
Sloane Kessler and
Alexis Zadjura earning honorable mentions. In the preseason poll, Elon was selected to finish third behind Towson and James Madison. The third-place selection is the highest Elon has been in a preseason poll in the program's brief history.
UP NEXT
The Phoenix will begin its journey through the 2017 CAA Women's Lacrosse Championships with the semifinals on Friday, May 5, at Johnny Unitas Stadium at Towson. Elon will know its opponent after the results of this weekend's games.
