Women’s Basketball Opens 2021-22 Season at High Point Tuesday

ELON, N.C.—Elon women's basketball will begin its 2021-22 season with a 5:00 p.m. matchup at High Point on Nov. 9.

THE MATCHUP
-High Point leads the overall series, 39-37.
-Elon won the last meeting between the two teams on Dec. 19, 2015, 80-69.

SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
-Elon returns nine players from last season's team, including seniors Brie Perpignan, Peyton Carter, Kayla Liles, Duru Tasman, Evonna McGill, Ariana Nance and Tyja Traore.
-The maroon and gold also welcomed transfers Bria Harmon and Ajia James in addition to freshmen Kamryn Doty and Diamond Monroe to the roster.
-Elon was picked to place sixth in the CAA preseason poll. Perpignan was named All-CAA honorable mention. Perpignan started in all 15 games last season, averaging 28 minutes per contest. The guard finished the 2020-21 season tied for sixth in the CAA in assist/turnover ratio (1.4) in addition to tying for seventh in assists per game (3.2). She also led the Phoenix in points per game (9.9) and assists (48) while also tying Liles for the team high in steals (22).
-Charlotte Smith is in her 11th season as head coach. Her coaching record at Elon currently stands at 169-130, just four wins away from breaking the program record for all-time wins.

SCOUTING HIGH POINT
-High Point defeated Mount Olive in an exhibition on Nov. 5, 82-68. Skyler Curran paced the Panters in scoring with 18 points, followed by Jenson Edwards (12) and Nakyah Terrell (10) to round out the double-digit scoring. Curran also grabbed a team-high seven boards.
-The Panthers were named the favorite in the 2021 Big South preseason poll. Curran was named the Preseason Player of the Year and first team selection, while Edwards was tabbed second team.
-High Point come into the season after earning its first ever Big South tournament title, making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history. HPU ended up falling to the No. 1 seed, UCONN, in the opening round, 59-102.
-The head coach of the Panthers is Chelsea Banbury.

The Phoenix will host Howard in its home opener inside Schar Center on Monday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
