Phoenix Finishes Fourth on Final Day of CAA Championship

SAINT HELENA ISLAND, S.C. – Elon University men's golf had its best round of the 2022 CAA Championship on Tuesday, April 26 as the Phoenix recorded a two-under par 286. The team finished with a 54-hole total of four-over 868 to take fourth place.

"First of all, I want to thank our seniors: Max Ferrari, Graham Hutchinson, William Frodigh, Josef Dransfeld, Cristian Del Vecchio and Dawson Daniels," said head coach Don Hill. "They've been great leaders this year and we made some big strides as a team. We led the field this week in eagles and were second in birdies, but we were next to last in pars. On a positive note, we were one of three teams to place three guys in the top 13. But in the meantime, we've got to go home and do our job in the classroom and get ready for summer golf."

College of Charleston captured the team title at 27-under par 837, UNCW was the runner-up at eight-under 856 and Drexel took third with a two-under 862. In the individual standings, CofC's Kieron van Wyk shot a 13-under 203 to win the tournament and teammate Nevill Ruiter came in second place with a 10-under 206. UNCW's Walker Isley tallied a five-under 211 to grab third place.

HIGHLIGHTS
Garrett Risner recorded a two-under 70 for the second time to finish sixth at three-under 213. The Holly Springs, N.C. native made five birdies on the day, to include back-to-back on holes 13 and 14. Matthew Doyle carded the team's best individual round of the tournament with a three-under 69. The true freshman from John's Island, S.C. made five birdies (four on the front nine) and also eagled the par-5 13th hole. He finished tied for 13th at 218 (+2) alongside teammate Bronson Myers, who fired a two-over 74 for his final 18 holes. Juan Callejo Ropero shot a one-over 73, his best round of the championship, to tie for 26th with a score of 223 (+7). William Frodigh came in 32nd at 226 (+10) after hitting a four-over 76.

Risner and Callejo Ropero led the 45-player field in par-5 scoring with averages of 4.42 and both totaled 12 birdies to lead the maroon and gold. Myers and Risner also converted a team-high 33 putts for par.
