Elon Welcomes Wingate To Schar Center On Saturday

ELON, N.C. — The Elon University women's basketball team (2-5) returns home Saturday afternoon when it welcomes Wingate (5-2) to Schar Center. Tipoff against the Bulldogs is slated for 1:00 p.m.

THE SERIES   
  • Saturday will be the 44th meeting between Elon and Wingate, but Saturday's matchup will mark the first time during the Phoenix Division I era (since 199-2000).
  • Wingate leads the overall series 27-16 over the Phoenix.
  • The last time the two teams met was in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament when Elon fell 71-56 to the Bulldogs on March 1, 1997, in Boiling Springs, N.C.
  • Elon's last win in the series was an 89-74 victory at Cuddy Arena on Jan. 11, 1997.

LAST TIME OUT
  • The maroon and gold fell Tuesday evening at Old Dominion 60-29 inside Chartway Arena.
  • Regina Walton was Elon's leading scorer with nine points along with stating three boards, one steal and one assist.
  • Iycez Adams was second on the team netting seven points followed by Maraja Pass with five points. Pass led the Phoenix on the glass with six rebound and added two assists to her totals.
  • Adams, Maya Johnson and Vanessa Taylor all recorded one block apiece.
  • Seven Phoenix players stated a steal, led by Johnson who had two on Tuesday evening.
  • In the first 20 minutes of play, Elon outnumbered the Monarchs in steals (6-3) and blocks (2-1).
  • As a team, the Phoenix combined to shoot 23.4% (11-for-47) from the floor.
SCOUTING WINGATE
  • Wingate enters Saturday's matchup at 5-2 on the season with their most recent win coming Wednesday evening against Columbus State at home 59-46.
  • The Bulldogs are 1-1 this season on the road, falling at Carson-Newman 93-64 before winning at UVA-Wise 76-74.
  • Last season, Wingate went 23-8 overall and 14-4 in South Atlantic Conference play, finishing second in the regular season. The Bulldogs were tabbed to finish third overall in the 2023-24 SAC Preseason poll.
  • Sophomore guard Hannah Clark and Emily Hege were both preseason second team All-SAC honorees. Hege was named SAC Freshman of the Year last season and earned second team All-SAC honors last season finishing second on the team with 13.5 points per game, shooting 44% from the field. Clark earned third team All-SAC honors last season as she finished third on the team, averaging 11.8 points per game, dishing out a team-best 91 assists and grabbing a team-high 56 steals.
  • Hege leads the Bulldogs and ranks second in the conference in scoring average with 18.9 points per game. Clark is second on the team and ranks fourth in the league with 17.7 points per game while tallying a team-best 2.43 steals a game.
  • Freshman forward Trinity Breedlove leads Wingate in rebounding average with six boards per game and has posted a team high 12 blocks so far this season.
  • Elon's head coach Charlotte Smith will see a familiar face as she welcomes her former coach Ann Hancock to Schar Center. Hancock was the assistant coach at North Carolina, helping the Tarheels win the 1994 national championship where Smith hit the buzzer-beating, game-winning three-pointer.
  • Hancock has been at the helm of Wingate's program for 12 seasons starting her tenure before the 2012-13 season. She has led the Bulldogs to eight NCAA Division II tournament appearances, winning three SAC conference tournaments and two SAC regular season titles.
  • Before the season began, Hancock was nominated for the NCAA Division II's 50th Anniversary Gold Award. This award goes to someone who has helped shape Division II over the course of its 50 years.
EDUCATION DAY IS BACK AGAIN                    
  • The Elon women's basketball team will welcome local elementary school students to campus again this season for a fun-filled Education Day matinee.
  • The game this year will be against Northeastern on Feb. 2, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in Schar Center. This marks the second time that Elon held an Education Day since Jan. 27, 2011.
  • Last year the program welcomed more than 2,400 elementary school students from 10 Alamance-Burlington School System schools as well as Burlington Christian Academy and The Burlington School. Overall, 3,087 fans attended the game, marking the largest crowd in Elon's Division I era. This was also the largest crowd recorded by the conference last season which helped Elon land second in total attendance with 25,859.

  • Elon travels west on I-40 on Sunday, Dec. 10 to take on UNCG. Game time for that contest is set for 2 p.m.
