Women’s Basketball Opens Season Monday Against High Point

ELON, N.C. — The Elon women's basketball team opens the 2024-25 season on Monday night as the Phoenix hosts High Point in Schar Center. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.

THE SERIES   
  • Elon holds a slight 40-39 edge over the Panthers in the all-time series after defeating High Point 74-66 on December 30, 2023.
  • The Phoenix has won the last four meetings between the two teams dating back to 2015.
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Phoenix defeated Winston-Salem State 76-46 on Friday, Nov. 1 in their exhibition game.
  • Freshman Jayda Angel led the team with 13 points followed by Raven Preston with 11.
  • Hannah Dereje tallied a team-high nine rebounds while Preston added seven.
  • Maraja Pass had a team-best six assists while Iycez Adams recorded five steals.
  • As a team, Elon shot 40.6 percent from the field and forced 26 turnovers.
PRESEASON PRAISE
  • The Phoenix was picked to finish seventh in the CAA Preseason Poll.
  • Senior forward Iycez Adams was selected to the Preseason All-CAA Second Team while redshirt sophomore guard Raven Preston earned Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention honors.
  • Adams averaged a team-best 10.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game last season.
  • She tied for second in the league last season in blocks per game and was third in the conference in total blocked shots (49).
  • The Greensboro, N.C. native recorded five double-double performances last year, including three straight from Jan. 14-21, 2024. 
  • Raven Preston returns to play this season for the Phoenix after missing last season due to injury. Preston became the first CAA Rookie of the Year in Elon program history after averaging 11.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
  • The two will play together for the Phoenix for the first time since playing with each other in 2020-21 at Quality Education Academy.
IT'S PASS TIME              
  • Maraja Pass appeared in all 30 matchups last season making 20 starts.
  • Pass led the team with 110 assists in her freshman season, tying for second in most assists by a freshman in Elon's Division I era.
  • She ranked first among all CAA freshmen in assists (110), assists per game (3.7) and assist/turnover ratio (1.3).
  • She also paced the team in free throws made (62), free throw attempts (96) and steals (39)
  • Pass was second on the team with 8.6 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game.
  • She reached double figures in points in 11 games during her rookie season, including two 20-point performances.
  • Pass earned three CAA Rookie of the Week honors and was named to the 2023-24 CAA All-Rookie Team.
THEY'RE BACK
  • Redshirt junior Kamryn Doty and redshirt sophomore Raven Preston return to the court this season for the Phoenix after both missing last season due to injuries.
  • Preston appeared and started in 27 games in the 2022-23 season averaging 30.7 minutes per game. She reached double-figure points in 18 games during her rookie season, including 13-of-16 in CAA play. Preston ranked third in the conference in rebounds per game with 8.1 and posted six double-doubles on the season, the most by any CAA freshman since 2015-16.
  • Doty appeared in all 30 games making 25 starts in the 2022-23 season. She averaged 5.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.1 assists.
GETTING DEFENSIVE                              
  • Elon enters this season bringing back their top two rebounders and the team leaders in steals and blocks.
  • Iycez Adams and Maraja Pass led the team in rebounds last season. Adams recorded a team-high 49 blocks while Pass added 39 steals to lead the team.
  • Raven Preston also returns after recording a team-high 218 rebounds and 37 steals in the 2022-23 season.
  • Elon ranked sixth in the league in average blocks per game at 3.09 and seventh in opponents points per game for the 2023-24 season.
  • Elon held its 2023-24 opponents to 29.2% from behind the arc and ranked No. 4 in steals per game at 8.03.
FRESH FACES
  • Elon boasts six newcomers, including five freshmen in Jayda Angel, Alyssa Ervin, Samira Khalil, Kierra Morrow and Ashlee Shaw, along with one transfer in Laila Anderson.
  • Angel was a four-year varsity letter winner at Cape Fear High School and was North Carolina's top scorer with 2,746. She was named to the All-State Team two years in a row and earned Player of the Year honors three times.
  • Ervin won back-to-back state championships in 2022 and 2023 with Carroll County High School. She was Virginia's 3A Player of the Year in 2022-23 and 2023-24 while also earning First Team All-State honors all four years.
  • Khalil played at the Hammond school where she was a four-time All-Region Player and two-time SCISA All-Star.
  • Morrow was a two-time conference champion and 2024 state champion at Cannon School. She was selected as a 2023-24 McDonald's All-American Nominee.
  • Shaw was a four-year varsity player at West Cabarrus High School and named team MVP in 2021.
  • Anderson, a junior transfer from Mount Olive, paced the team and ranked fourth in the Conference Carolinas with 17.5 points per game. She ranked in the top 50 in Division II programs in points per game (17.5) and steals per game (2.6) last season. The Burlington, N.C. native was named to the 2023-24 Conference Carolinas Second Team and registered 20 or more points in 10 contests.
2023-24 REWIND                          
  • The Phoenix went 11-21 last season and 7-11 in CAA play to finish ninth in the league.
  • Nine of Elon's victories came on the road, six of which were league matchups.
  • Elon ranked No. 5 in the CAA in team offensive rebounds per game (12.3) and No. 6 in blocked shots per game (3.09).
  • Adams led Elon in scoring (10.3 per game), rebounds (7.0 per game) and total blocks (49), while Pass paced the team in assists (110) and steals (39). 
SCOUTING HIGH POINT
  • High Point went 20-12 overall and 14-2 in Big South play last season, finishing first in the regular season and making it to the semifinals of the Big South Championship.
  • The Panthers were selected to finish first in the Big South Conference for the second year in a row.
  • Nakyah Terrell was named to the First Team All-Conference Preseason team while Jaleesa Lawrence and Neveah Zavala earned Preseason Second Team All-Conference honors.
  • Chelsea Banbury enters her sixth season as head coach of the Panthers.
UP NEXT
