Women’s Basketball Set for Road Matchups Against Delaware, Drexel

ELON, N.C. — The Elon women's basketball team (10-6, 4-1 CAA) heads on the road this weekend, taking on Delaware (4-11, 1-4 CAA) in a Friday night matchup at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Sunday showdown against Drexel (7-8, 3-2 CAA) at 1 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY
  • The series between the Phoenix and Blue Hens stands even at 10-10.
  • Elon has claimed victory in their last two road games against Delaware, the latest being a 54-49 win on March 3, 2024.
  • Drexel holds a 15-5 advantage in the all-time series against Elon.
  • The Phoenix have dropped their last six matchups to the Dragons, including a 56-43 loss on March 9, 2024.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Elon went 2-0 last weekend in CAA play, defeating Stony Brook 60-48 and Hofstra 70-51.
  • Iycez Adams led the Phoenix against the Seawolves with a season-high 17 points.
  • Jayda Angel paced Elon on Friday, recording nine rebounds and three steals.
  • Laila Anderson and Raven Preston also reached double figures in scoring against Stony Brook, while Maraja Pass dished out a team-high four assists.
  • The Phoenix outmatched the Seawolves in rebounds (38-33), points off turnovers (23-6), steals (8-6), and assists (10-8).
  • Elon achieved a season-best 61.2 percent shooting from the field in the second half against Stony Brook.
  • Preston recorded her fifth double-double of the season on Sunday against Hofstra, leading the team with 16 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, and matching her career-high with two blocks.
  • Angel came off the bench to contribute 14 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
  • Adams reached double figures for the eighth time this season, scoring 12 points on an efficient 6-of-8 shooting performance while also tallying a team-high four blocks, surpassing 100 career blocks in the process.

  • Elon dominated the boards, holding Hofstra to their lowest rebound total of the season while outrebounding them 38-24.

  • Elon matched its season-high field goal percentage, shooting 50% (27-of-54) from the field, and achieved a season-best 54.5% shooting from beyond the arc. 
STARTING ON A GOOD NOTE
  • Elon's 19-point victory over Hofstra was the largest win over a Division I opponent since defeating Gardner-Webb 90-69 on Nov. 11, 2023, and the largest CAA victory since an 85-61 win over William & Mary on Mar. 3, 2022.
  • The maroon and gold's win over the Pride was the seventh home win of the season and marked the most home victories since going 10-4 at home in 2021-22.
  • The Phoenix's 4-1 start in CAA play is their best since starting 5-1 during the 2016-17 season.
ELON IN THE CAA
  • Raven Preston is third in the CAA with 9.3 rebounds per game, tied for fourth in steals per game with 2.1, and ranks 15th in points per game with 11.7.
  • Maraja Pass ranks sixth in the league in assists per game (3.5) and is second in assist/turnover ratio at 1.7.
  • Iycez Adams is tied for seventh in the CAA in both total blocks (15) and blocks per game (1.0).
  • As a team, the Phoenix ranks third fourth in the league in steals per game (9.73) and fourth in offensive rebounds per game (13.5).
  • Elon is the only team in the CAA to reach double-figure blocks in a contest this season.
JAYDA'S ANGELS
  • Freshman Jayda Angel has earned four CAA Rookie of the Week honors so far in the 2024-25 season.
  • Angel earned CAA Rookie of the Week for the fourth time after an impressive weekend, where she averaged 11.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.5 steals in the Phoenix's 2-0 sweep of Stony Brook and Hofstra. 
  • Jayda Angel provided a spark off the bench, leading the team with 15 points in the win over Hampton. She also contributed four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
  • Angel scored 14 points, going 7-for-11 from the field, while adding seven rebounds and two steals against the Tribe.
  • Angel reached double figures for the fifth time this season, scoring 11 points and leading the Phoenix defensively with three steals in the win over Lees-McRae.
  • Angel delivered an impressive performance in the team's win at Long Beach State, scoring nine points—including the game-winning basket—and contributing eight rebounds.
  • Angel tallied 12 points shooting 4-for-9 from the field while also adding nine rebounds, two assists and a steal in the team's win over Longwood.
  • Angel notched her first career 20-point performance against Elon's first Power Four matchup of the season.
  • She led all Phoenix scorers with 20 points, shooting 7-for-13 from the field, and added six rebounds and two steals, tying for the team lead in both categories, during the game against Virginia Tech.
  • She made a strong impression in her first two collegiate games, leading the Phoenix in scoring in victories over High Point and Gardner-Webb.
  • Angel averaged 17.5 points in her first collegiate week.
  • She nearly reached a double-double against the Bulldogs with seven rebounds and 17 points. 
SCOUTING DELAWARE
  • Delaware enters the matchup with a 4-11 overall record and a 1-4 mark in CAA play, coming off a win at Hampton and a loss at Campbell.
  • The Blue Hens finished last season with an 11-20 record, including a 7-11 performance in CAA competition, placing 10th in the league standings.
  • Delaware was predicted to finish sixth in the 2024-25 CAA Preseason Poll.
  • Chloe Wilson received All-CAA Preseason Second Team honors, while Ande'a Cherisier and Tara Cousins earned Honorable Mention recognition.
  • Cousins (11.6), Wilson (10.7), and Cherisier (10.5) all average double-digit scoring for Delaware. Wilson also leads the team and ranks fifth in the CAA in rebounds, averaging 8.6 per game.
  • Ella Wanzer contributes a team-best 1.5 steals per game, while Cousins leads in assists with 45 on the season.
  • Head coach Sarah Jenkins is in her third season leading the Blue Hens' program.
SCOUTING DREXEL
  • Drexel holds a 7-8 overall record and a 3-2 mark in CAA play, coming off a loss to North Carolina A&T and a win over Hampton last weekend.
  • Last season, the Dragons finished 19-15 overall and 10-8 in league play, securing seventh place in the CAA standings. They went on to win the CAA Championship before falling to Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • Drexel was projected to finish second in the conference with two first-place votes in the 2024-25 CAA Preseason Poll.
  • Sophomore guard Amaris Baker, a member of the All-CAA Preseason First Team, leads the league in scoring with an average of 18.7 points per game.
  • Chloe Hodges ranks first in the conference in steals per game (2.3) and contributes a team-high 4.1 assists per game, tied for second in the CAA.
  • Deja Evans leads the team and is second in the league in blocked shots, averaging 2.3 per game.
  • Baker and Grace O'Neill lead the CAA in minutes played, averaging over 36 minutes per game each.
  • Amy Mallon is in her sixth season as the head coach of Drexel's women's basketball program.

  • The maroon and gold will host William & Mary on Friday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m., followed by a matchup against Monmouth on Sunday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m. to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
