STARTING FIVE
1. Toe To Toe
The Phoenix pushed ACC foe Virginia Tech to the brink before falling 82-81 in overtime Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg. Elon led for nearly 38 minutes of game time and built a first-half advantage as large as 19 points, but the Hokies rallied in the second half and edged ahead in the extra period.
DeMarco Johnson scored a go-ahead layup to put Elon in front 81-80 with 25 seconds remaining in overtime, but a basket in the paint from Virginia Tech's Christian Gurdak 15 seconds later proved to be the decisive score. Elon had a look at the final buzzer, but
Bryson Cokley's 3-point attempt was blocked.

2. Team Effort
The Phoenix earned a signature nonconference win last Wednesday, knocking off Richmond – which entered the game 9–1 overall –73–70 at the Schar Center. Elon turned 20 Richmond turnovers into 29 points and erased a six-point halftime deficit to secure its third straight victory. It was a balanced effort for the Phoenix, as leading scorers
Chandler Cuthrell and
Randall Pettus II were held to a combined 16 points.
Kacper Klaczek set the tone with 16 points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc, adding six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Ja'Juan Carr (13) and
Isaac Harrell (11) also reached double figures, with Harrell knocking down three 3-pointers. Despite finishing with nine points on 4-of-11 shooting, Cuthrell delivered the game's biggest moment, converting a decisive three-point play with 53 seconds remaining to give Elon a 73-70 lead that it would not relinquish.
Â
3. All Aboard The Cuthrell Train
Graduate forward
Chandler Cuthrell has emerged as one of the nation's most productive scorers in his first and only season with the Phoenix, leading the CAA and ranking 17th nationally at 21.2 points per game. A collegiate journeyman with previous stops at Odessa, UTSA and Purdue Fort Wayne, Cuthrell arrived at Elon with a career scoring average of 6.1 points per game but has since established himself as a true three-level scorer. He is shooting 52.8% from the field and 30.8% from beyond the arc while consistently pressuring defenses off the dribble.
Â
Cuthrell has been particularly effective at getting to the free throw line, ranking 12th nationally with 98 attempts and converting at a 71.4% clip (70 of 98). Named to the early-season watch list for the Lou Henson Award – presented annually to the nation's top mid-major player – Cuthrell is one of just three players in Division I averaging at least 21.0 points (21.2) and 7.0 rebounds (7.0), joining Duke's Cameron Boozer and Texas Tech's JT Toppin.
Â
4. It's Raining Threes
Elon continues to be the CAA's most prolific perimeter shooting team, ranking first in the league in 3-pointers made (10.0 per game) and attempted (28.3 per game) while sitting second in 3-point percentage (35.4%). After an uncharacteristic 3-of-19 showing against NIU on Dec. 13, the Phoenix rebounded with back-to-back games featuring 10 made 3-pointers against Richmond (10-of-25) and Virginia Tech (10-of-30), marking its eighth game this season with double-digit threes. Though still early, this group is on pace to become just the fourth Phoenix team in the Division I era (1999-present) to average double figures in made 3-pointers per game.
Â
The focal point of Elon's perimeter attack is
Randall Pettus II, who leads the CAA in total 3-pointers made (34-of-79) while ranking second in both percentage (43.0%) and 3-pointers per game (2.83). Pettus has knocked down multiple threes in 10 of 12 games. Klaczek has also been dangerous from deep on fewer attempts, connecting on 18 of 37 for a 48.6% clip.
Â
5. Harrell's Hot Hand
Elon forward
Isaac Harrell has begun to find his offensive rhythm after a slow start to his third season as a Phoenix. The junior has averaged 13.5 points per game on 10-of-15 shooting over the past two contests – a 73-70 win against Richmond and an 82-81 overtime loss at Virginia Tech – including a 7-of-9 mark from 3-point range. A proven perimeter threat who shot nearly 40% from deep as a sophomore in 2024-25, Harrell opened this season 10-of-40 from beyond the arc through the first 10 games before breaking out with a 3-of-5 performance against Richmond and a perfect 4-of-4 showing at Virginia Tech.
Â
UP NEXT
Elon turns its attention to the start of conference play, hosting Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) opponents Northeastern and College of Charleston on Dec. 29 and Dec. 31 at the Schar Center. Tipoff against the Huskies is set for 7 p.m. ET on the 29th.
