RICHMOND, Va. – Elon freshman center
Tamia Watkins was named the CAA Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced on Monday.
Watkins averaged 9.0 points, 7.7 rebounds
, and 1.0 steal
s per game in Elon's 2-1 week. In the team's win at Hampton last Monday, Watkins recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 points and a season-high 15 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive glass, while adding two steals and a block. She followed the strong road performance with eight points and six rebounds against College of Charleston at home on Friday, before chipping in six points, two rebounds, two assists
, and a steal in the win over Towson on Sunday.
Watkins shares the team lead with 4.9 rebounds per game and is shooting 41.7% from the field this season.
In addition to Watkins earning the weekly award for the second time this season after first receiving the honor on Dec. 1, Elon has now claimed the CAA Rookie of the Week accolade three straight times since Jan. 21, with
Ashanti Fox winning the previous two.
Watkins and the Phoenix (10-11, 5-4 CAA) will travel to North Carolina A&T on Friday before hosting William & Mary on Sunday.
