GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Elon University men's golf team is in first place and at 10-under par with one hole still to play in the second round of the Grandover Collegiate, hosted by UNCG at the Grandover Resort.
The 15-team field is playing the par-72, 7,270-yard East Course. Round two was stopped at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23 due to darkness and hasn't been finalized.
"As a team we did a lot of nice things today," head coach
Don Hill said afterwards. "
Garrett Risner was in a good groove with his ball striking and therefore he was able to put pressure on the golf course."
Following round one, Toledo was two strokes ahead of the Phoenix and in first place with a six-under 282 and the host Spartans grabbed second with a five-under 283.
"We currently sit at 10-under with one hole remaining in the second round," continued Hill. "Tomorrow will be a good challenge for us with so many quality teams at the top of the leaderboard. We will need all five guys competing at a high level to be in position down the stretch."
HIGHLIGHTS
Risner led Elon through the first 18 holes, firing a four-under 68 to tie for third. The sophomore from Holly Springs, N.C. birdied six holes with three on the front nine and another three on the back.
Graham Hutchinson was one stroke behind Risner and tied for fifth after carding a three-under 69, and
William Frodigh tied for ninth with a minus-two 70. The Phoenix then had three players tied for 26th as
Bronson Myers,
Max Ferrari and
Juan Callejo Ropero each shot a one-over 73 to start their days.
In the second round, Risner made another five birdies for a two-under 70 and is currently tied for fifth. Myers made a jump up in the standings thanks to a four-under 68 in his second trip around the course. The Columbia, S.C. native finds himself tied for 10th with a 141 (-3) heading into Sunday. Callejo Ropero is currently tied for 13th and two under in the round with 17 holes scored, Frodigh is tied for 17th and two-over through 17, and Rabadan is seven-over through 16.
"Bronson is such a competitor," commented Hill. "He bounced back from a round where he played better than his score to post 68 in the afternoon. Both he and Juan battled this afternoon to keep us moving in the right direction."
