Replacing a four-year starter is never an easy task and Elon will face that challenge at running back as Jaylan Thomas graduated and moved on after rushing for more than 2,000 career yards. But the Phoenix does have experience and talent to lean on.
 
"I am excited about the opportunity for these guys to develop mentally and physically this off-season," Running Backs Coach Clay Browning said. "We have a talented, young running back room, and I'm looking forward to helping these guys reach their full potential."
 
Redshirt sophomore McKinley Witherspoon and true sophomore Malik Griffin have both played in 14 games during their careers at Elon and have shown, in limited opportunities, the ability to produce.
 
Witherspoon rushed for 299 yards and six touchdowns during the fall, carrying the ball 86 times. He also proved to be a pass-catching threat out of the backfield, posting 13 receptions for 63 yards. Griffin played in 10 games during the fall and had 13 carries for 26 yards.
 
Behind those two, redshirt freshman DJ Moyer played in four games in 2021, getting seven carries. Redshirt sophomore Wayne Dixie III adds to the depth and looks to push for playing time moving forward.
 
Along with those returners, Elon will add true freshman Marcus McFarlane in the fall.
